James Swan Hall was constructed as a men's dormitory in 1914. Swan Hall was renovated in the 1950's into its contemporary use as faculty offices. The necessity to renovate and expand Swan Hall was generated by a combination of factors, including the need for modernization to current codes for accessibility, expansion and reorganization of spaces for better function, updating and enhancing the built environment and utility infrastructure, and addressing both structural and envelop deficiencies that were a result of years of seismic stress and general wear. The restoration of the exterior of the original building was completed in accordance with the Secretary of Interior standards. This project achieved LEED Gold Certification through the USGBC, marking it as resource efficient.
